Topic: Layout metatags

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The layout of images should be metatags, since they refer to the image themselves. However, many of them shouldn't be used.

Note:
I got some things mixed up while making this, huge changes in progress.

create alias eight_frame_grid (24) -> comic (327183)
create alias eleven_frame_grid (0) -> comic (327183)

create alias ten_frame_staggered_grid (1) -> comic (327183)
create alias twelve_frame_staggered_grid (5) -> comic (327183)

Reason: The layout of images should be metatags, since they refer to the image themselves, not objects within the image.

Most of these are overspecific tags that should not be used. four_frame_grid may be worth keeping.

(Notably, this is the only one with tags that are realistically used)

I'd say the vast majority, if not all, of these should be nuked. They're not all clear what they mean (what is row_two_layout vs two_row_layout? free_flow_layout vs irregular_grid_layout? staggered_grid_layout vs staggering_(layout)? what is separation_layout? base_one_layout? as someone who doesn't make comics, these are gobligook), and too under-utilized to be useful searches. The specific counts of things also seem too specific (is someone going to remember the specific number of rows or frames or "base"? if you're off by one, the search will fail to find it), with some seeming to be just combinations of other tags (e.g. six_frame_staggered_grid = six_frame_image + staggered_grid_layout?). These were largely created by someone who had a history of pushing unnecessarily specific tags, and got in trouble for the way they were tagging.

I made an oops in the google sheets i used to prep. Fix in progress.

These could probably all be aliased to comic, rather than creating a bunch of invalid tags that need manual cleanup. Or at least mass updated to comic before aliasing to invalid_tag for easier future cleanup. There isn't really anything to replace them with, so there's no point keeping each one individually in the Invalid category.

That is true. Will fix. There are a few I think may be useful.

I think that for layout, it is a lot more important to separate multi-frame and uni-frame pictures than putting complicated tags to say in what way the picture is multi-frame.
Why did layout started complicated ? I don't even know a tag to say a picture is made of only one part or to say it's made of multiple part (multi-frame).

I'm ok with the other aliases but are you sure we shouldn't keep horizontal/vertical_staggering/blockage?

I don't love the grid ones specifically. Images can be a grid of panels without being a comic (eg. expression_sheet). Better to disambiguation or invalidate them, in my opinion.

Edit: forgot to conclude my statement.

I'd just nuke them. And I wouldn't make comic aliases for this. Maybe mass update, and then invalidate them. No one would start a search with eigh, max, nin, base, and so on, to be redirected to comic. This would completely pollute the auto complete. I think we should take more care of how necessary an alias is. And they are not in this case, in my opinion.

I can agree with that, the person these tags stem from is no longer around so they should not be seeing regular use, nuking/mupdating them should be enough

Agreed with Dubs that many of these aliases would clog autocomplete. Additionally, we can probably figure out better targets for a lot of these tags than just comic.

Personally, I think the grid_layout tag would be fine to keep, then we can just mass update all of the specific grid count tags to that instead of comic - especially since as Quenir said, some of those posts might not even be comics, which would cause mistags. These tags were all populated by a single user anyway, so aliases aren’t really necessary here. We can even nuke some of the ones that we can’t find any good target for, if necessary.

I have created the tag group : Layout. It don't use any of the tags asked for deletion and may be useful to better see cases.
I would say that the most important thing to get from it is that comic imply a time relation between parts, and a picture can have multiple part without that relation (example : expression sheet).
